Sculpture

This wooden sculpture by the artist, Philemon Sangweni, was made in response to the political violence in the years preceding South Africa’s first democratic elections. The figures in the centre of the sculpture can be seen with vehicle tyres around their necks. ‘Necklacing’ was a method of execution used in the political violence – a tyre placed around a victim’s neck would be filled with fuel and set alight.
